He knows feet, he knows when they're good and he knows when they're injured; he was trained as a cordwainer by his father. Yes, Cyril used to have good feet himself, now the cane he uses as a choreographer is also an aid for his right ankle that complains in the cold and drafty London winter. He used to be a rising star at the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen, now he choreographs for dancing girls at the newly established Empire Theatre "song and supper" room, working with the French aristocrat's daughter, ballerina, Claudine Duval, who thinks it's all beneath her, including him. She has good feet, however. That much he'll give her.
+ history
From he was 10 till he turned 14 and met Mr. Lilienlund, Cyril studied the art of cordwaining with his father who made shoes for a living. Every other day Cyril would go to school, every other day he would help at the shop and on the days he went to school, he would be allowed to take dance lessons with the local ballet teacher, Mrs. Harris, in recognition of his untameable energy levels. Once he'd finished school, he was supposed to stop his ballet training as well and become a cordwainer full-time, to help out his father, but that day the ballet master of the Royal Danish Ballet was in the neighbourhood and popped by a lesson to scour for talent, and he found Cyril. So, he met with Cyril's father, promised the boy a sparkling career in Denmark and was allowed to bring Cyril with him back.
Such began Cyril's adventure in Denmark and he both thrived and hated it there, the ballet school was tough and unforgiving, and even when he gave his all, the other children picked on him, on his wobbly Danish and his technique "from the gutter". But Mr. Lilienlund believed in him and supported him, often inviting him over for supper with him and his wife.
Eventually, at age 17, Cyril joined the company and within a few years he was undeniably star-tracked. He danced all the great roles, James in La Sylphide and Gennaro in Napoli, but then one day he had an awkward landing after a jump and his good foot gave out. It was supposed to be an easy injury to overcome, but it only got worse and eventually, even Mr. Lilienlund's patience ran dry. He couldn't wait for Cyril anymore. His contract was terminated and Cyril was on his own in a strange land.
He went, yes, he crawled back home. And there, he decided to start over. From scratch. He gave ballet lessons, he choreographed for small theatre performances, nothing fancy, but it paid for his daily bread. Then, finally, the Empire Theatre wanted to engage him for their new concept of Music Hall entertainment and because it was a steady job with a steady income, Cyril said yes.
